Message from the Chair

Where the Cutting Edge Begins

Modern learning environments are advancing quicker than ever.

Educators, researchers, trainers and learning designers are challenged not only to keep pace with these changes but also to get ahead of them through the informed and effective use of data and instructional technology.

That’s where the NIU Department of the Educational Technology, Research and Assessment comes in – and it’s also where you can acquire the knowledge and skills to become a leader in this critically important field.

Our innovative and nationally ranked degree programs and our accomplished faculty are on the cutting edge of instructional technology and in methodologies of research and assessment to improve teaching, learning and scholarship.

I am Wei-Chen Hung, chair of the department and I am one of you. I hold a Ph.D. in Instructional Systems Technology, with a minor in Information Science and I focus my research on problem-solving, human-computer interaction and performance support systems.

Within our department, we offer strong graduate and nationally accredited certification programs in face-to-face and online formats, the latter of which has earned us six consecutive Top 5 rankings from U.S. News & World Report.

Specializations include:

Undergraduate studies are available through our Bachelor of Science in Applied Management (BSAM) program, which prepares students for careers in instructional technology, training and evaluation (ITTE) in business, government and educational sectors. The program is designed for students or professionals holding associate of applied science, associate of arts and associate of science degrees in disciplines directly related to the BSAM-ITTE emphasis.
